Using Rhythms to Find Your Flow

When it comes to planning our year or structuring our days, routines are often the go-to strategy discussed—morning routines, evening routines, cleaning routines, you name it. But I’ll be honest, I’ve had a complicated relationship with routines. They never quite sat right with me. However, what I’ve found solace in and integrated, especially after becoming a mom, are rhythms within our household.

Let’s differentiate between the two: routines are fixed activities done at specific times every day or week, whereas rhythms are more fluid. They flow one after another without rigidly being tied to particular times. Rhythms set expectations while allowing room for flexibility and spontaneity, especially beneficial for parenting as it gives kids a sense of structure without constraining us to a strict routine.

In our home, planning revolves around rhythms. For instance, when organizing our mornings, I consider our weekly activities and pair similar tasks together. Whether it’s household errands or our homeschooling, I group them based on our outings or activities planned for the day. Likewise, for myself, I’ve established a loose routine of activities in the morning, not tied to specific times but ensuring I cover my personal tasks before diving into homeschooling with the kids.

What I appreciate most about rhythms is the liberty it allows both me and my kids. There’s no compulsion to follow a stringent schedule; rather, it’s about creating an environment where everyone has the flexibility to settle into the day in their own time, either by attending to personal tasks or diving into shared activities.

Our schedule isn’t rigidly fixed; instead, we have certain regular activities that we aim to incorporate without strictly allocating specific times or days. For instance, our monthly individual time with the kids or our monthly date nights—we have rhythms for these but not fixed routines. This flexibility suits us perfectly, especially during unpredictable days or travel plans.

What I’ve learned is that rhythms, unlike routines, are forgiving. If we miss a day or a week due to unforeseen circumstances, jumping back into our established rhythm is seamless without feeling like we’ve disrupted an entire routine.

“Our lives are not as fixed as we think. Rhythms can change the patterns of our days.” –

Gretchen Rubin

When considering your own schedule, it’s essential to reflect on how you incorporate rhythms versus routines into your life. Habit-building becomes more manageable through rhythms—it’s about creating habits without being tied to strict timings. Weekends and weekdays blend seamlessly when certain actions become habitual, not time-bound.

Moreover, integrating moments of “in and out breaths,” as I’ve learned from a Waldorf perspective, or balancing energetic and reflective activities throughout the day, has significantly improved our household flow. This approach helps manage energy levels and avoids burnout, especially important for children’s development.

I’m curious about your approach—are you more inclined towards routines or do rhythms resonate with you? How do you envision incorporating consistency and flow into your days? Perhaps it’s time to explore a more flexible approach that aligns with your lifestyle and brings a natural ebb and flow to your daily rhythm.
